This is the list of few questions that people have asked about my hijab and I.
How long is your hair
Lol. Yeah. It is so long that it touches my feet (just kidding). I have a neck length 4c hair which is super kinky. However, I still want it to grow longer because I want to. Hence, people should stop telling me to just cut my hair.
Do you do your hair?
Ding ding, yeah, I do various stuffs to my hair – plaiting, braiding, straightening, styling, you name it. Though I get lazy sometimes, I just do corn rows or pack it nicely to a bun.
Doesn’t the hijab inconvenient you based on weather?
Quite on the contrary, it makes me more comfortable. In the harsh cape winter, it keeps my ears, neck and head warm. In summer, it shield part of my face and neck from sunburn – you don’t believe me, try it for yourself.
How do you manage to keep it on your head?
Guess what? I had to do a year-long training on how to style my hijab (Tongue out; no time for that). I just learnt to style my scarf by regular practising and using hijab with proper texture (silk is nice, but not for my hijab, I can’t be fixing the slips per minute). I use pins to hold it down at 2-3 essential areas.
Can I see your hair?
Hell NO. especially if you aren’t a close female friend or related to me #mahram (i.e. meaning males that I cannot marry e.g. dad, son, brother, cousins though some say cousins aren’t part of mahram).
How many colors of hijab do you have?
All the colors that has ever existed (got you again – grin). I have the major colours in different shades and patterns – thanks to mum for the regular gift of scarves. I just colormatch the hijab to the outfit that I am wearing.
Where do you shop?
Ya Allah, that is how I moan when I go shopping! So many shops with so little hijabi-friendly clothes. Those shops that do stock up on my type of clothes are expensive. We really need more shops with affordable clothes. I cringe each time I see a beautiful skirt or gown with a weird pleat that runs till the top. I should probably start making my own clothes. For now, I will continue shopping at Jet, Pep, Truworths, Fashion world and cotton on.
Why don’t you take off your hijab for a while?
No thanks. I am comfortable with it. It’s not like it is bothering you. Even for my practicals, I just wear my labcoat on it – see no loose fabric.
Do you wash your hair and hijab?
Yes. I wash both regularly – shampoo wash for my hair twice a month, co wash every week. I even deep condition and treat my hair to prevent comb-breaking sessions while combing it. As for my hijab, I wash after wearing it once or twice.
Can I touch your hijab?
No thanks. Don’t ever do that unless you are one of my female friends – respect my privacy.
Do you shake hands?
Yes with my female friends – we even hug and peck. But guys, it is not allowed to shake you so please stop extending your hand to me and making me embarrassed when I turn you down.
