Organics Shampoo has always been favorite shampoo to cleanse and revive hair, I am sure most people will agree with me on this. Who wouldn’t want a shampoo bottle filled with purest essence of nature that nourish and increase hair shine? Well I do, with this in mind, I choose the Organics revitalizing shampoo for the purpose of this post. The Shampoo contains Aloe Vera and natural herbs. However, this is not just an ordinary review; let us get Up-close and Personal with Ingredients in Organics Shampoo. Aqua, Benzyl Salicyclate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Carbomer, Citric Acid, Citronellol, Sodium Hydroxide, CL 77891, Cocoamidopropyl Betaine, Dimethiconol, Disodium EDTA, Ethoxydiglycol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, Lysine HCL, Maltodextrin, Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Aloe Barbadensis, Chamomilla Recutita water, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, DMDM Hydantoin and Methylisothiazolinone, Methypropional, Mica, Parfum, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonoate.
Function of the Ingredients
- Aqua (water)
Aqua is the official term for water according to International Nomenclature of Cosmetics Ingredients (INCI). Water is the main ingredient in the Shampoo being a universal solvent. As a matter of fact, it constitute about 70 – 80 % of the formula. In addition, it also helps increase spread of the shampoo while reducing irritation.
- Benzyl Salicyclate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene and Linalool
Benzyl Salicyclate and Butylphenyl Methylpropional are synthetic fragrance compounds but Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene and Linalool are naturally occurring fragrances. Benzyl Salicyclate is an ester made from benzyl alcohol and salicylic acid meanwhile Butylphenyl Methylpropional is an aldehyde with floral scent. Citronellol is pale yellow oil that has sweet rosy scent. Hexyl Cinnamal is a natural chemical derived from chamomile oil, used as fragrance additive in shampoo. Limonene is found in citrus fruits but used as fragrance and solvent in shampoo. Linalool is a chemical derived from spices and flowers, also used as scent agent.
Carbomer is a series of polymers in form of white fluffy powder. It acts as thickener to increase the viscosity of the shampoo. It also aid suspension of solids that do not readily dissolve in liquid.
- Citric Acid and Sodium Hydroxide
They are both added to the shampoo to adjust the pH so the detergents can function optimally.
- CL 77891
CL 77891 (Titanium Dioxide) is a white natural mineral used as colorants in shampoo. Also, it reduces transparency of the formula but increase the paleness.
- Cocoamidopropyl Betaine
Cocoamidopropyl Betaine is obtained from coconut oil and acts an as emulsifier to aid mixing of oil and water. In addition, it boosts foam and bubble size of the shampoo and offer anti-static benefit to hair (1).
Dimethiconol is a non soluble silicone that functions as stabilizer to the emulsifiers. Furthermore, it adds silky texture to hair (1).
- Disodium EDTA
Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a crystalline powder often in aqueous solution. It also binds and deactivates metal ions to make sure clear formula with stable fragrance compounds.
Ethoxydiglycol is a clear solvent used to lessen viscosity of the shampoo.
- Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is a polymer that acts as conditioning agent in shampoo. It also reduces the harshness of the shampoo. It remains on the hair after the shampoo is rinsed out to improve the softness and feel of the hair.
- Lysine HCL
Lysine Hydrochloride (HCL) functions as conditioning agent in the shampoo.
Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate from starch and polysaccharide which binds and stabilizes compounds in the shampoo formula.
- Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Aloe Barbadensis, Chamomilla Recutita water
Natural herbs offer extra benefit to the hair. Melissa Officinalis (lemon balm) leaf extract soothes the scalp and acts as antibacterial agent. Additionally, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) is a herb that promotes hair growth while soothing itchy, flaky and dry scalp. Chamomilla Recutita (German chamomile) water has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds which improve the hair and skin.
- Methylchloroisothiazolinone, DMDM Hydantoin and Methylisothiazolinone
Preservatives added to shampoo to prevent bacteria and fungi growth due the high water content of the formula (1).
Mica is silicate minerals that occur naturally in various rocks. In effect, It adds white color to the shampoo.
Parfum (Fragrance) is often a mix of various fragrances/scent used to mask and/or change the smell of the sum ingredients in the shampoo.
- Propylene Glycol
Propylene glycol has a lot of functions however people mostly know it as antifreeze. It is a valuable humectant that can dissolve pigments and fragrance in a formula. Again, it acts as emulsifier alone or in combination with surfactants.
- Sodium Chloride
We all know this as table salt. It controls consistency of the shampoo and acts as emulsifier (1).
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS)
SLS is a detergent (i.e. surfactants) that adds suds and foam to the formula. It constitute about 10 – 15 % of the formula. In effect, applying shampoo to hair lead to formation of micelle which traps the oil inside. Micelle forms when oily molecules of surfactants align to the oily things in the hair and the water-soluble parts align in the water layer. Once the hair is rinsed, the micelle can be washed away with water (2).
TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonoate is an aromatic compound that acts as surfactants in shampoo. It enables cleansing of the hair by aiding mixing of water with dirt and oil in the hair.
In conclusion, I am honestly amazed by all I found out about this ingredients #Shocked. I am starting to doubt this shampoo; it’s like mid way between good and bad.
