You all know that scenario when you feel so alert at your bedtime and you decide to wait a bit more before sleeping – you start watching your favorite series or playing an interesting game. By the time you know it, it is midnight already so you hurry to bed. Yikes, no way you can get those 8 hours beauty sleep now. Guess what pays you a visit in the morning, dark circles and bags under eyes. Now, you are worried that everyone at school or work will notice those tired eyes. But, do not panic, I will show you the secrets of covering those nasty Dark Circles and Bags residing under your eyes.
WHAT ARE DARK CIRCLES?
Dark Circles are present when the thin periorbital skin around your eyelids shows veins (blood vessels) with the blood in it. When light wavelength passes through the veins, it appears green or brown or dark red in people with different skin tones. As a result, dark circles mostly seem bluish or grayish due to light reflected off the periorbital skin layer. Dark circles are mostly accompanied by puffiness i.e. eye bags.
WHAT CAUSES DARK CIRCLES?
Dark circles appear more prominent as we age and the skin layers around the eyes get thinner. Hyper pigmentation also causes overproduction of melanin which makes the area darker. Also, fatigue causes dark circles because the body makes cortisol, a chemical to boost your energy. This chemical cause blood volume to increase so veins increase in size. Furthermore, other causes of dark circles are oversleeping, stress, minor trauma, crying, excess salt intake, allergy, liver disease, high alcohol intake, sleeping on stomach regularly.
REMEDIES TO FIX DARK CIRCLES
- COLD COMPRESSES
Cold compresses reduce dark eye circles and eye bags because it constricts blood vessels. Placing a bag of frozen vegetables, chilled tea bags, chilled potato or cucumber slices or simply ice cubes in a napkin on the affected area for 3-5 minutes few times a day will fix the dark eye circles.
Cosmetics (makeup) still remain the effective and least painful way to cover dark circle. According to the color wheel rule, the suitable concealer color is orange or peach. Use a 1-2 shade darker concealer, blend it out with a sponge or makeup brush and apply a lighter concealer to brighten your under eye areas.
- SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Laser surgery is a procedure that can resurfaces the skin around the eyes– it removes dark eye circles while tightening or removing eye bags and it also breaks down same melanin. Another surgical procedure is Filler injections that hide veins and melanin that cause skin discoloration around the eyes. Surgical procedures are very effective and expensive – they might cost up to thousand dollars. The procedures also have many side effects and might have to be repeated over time.
